Sewing of Soul | Decide Kit

Presented by National Endowment of the Arts

Created by an internationally award-winning Thai artists, Sewing of Soul is told through the perspective of the Mardi Gras Indian Queens, with symbolic chapters celebrating the suit creation process, transformation into Orishas Oya & Oshun; and parade through the streets encountering other costumed revelers and crews, They leave a legacy of love behind.

Hall D + Roaming Installation

Black Masking Indian Queens Cherise Harrison-Nelson of Guardians of the Flame and Ausettua AmorAmenkum of Washitaw Nation will be illuminating traditional Black Masking Indian suits and channeling the spirit of two Orishas: The chaotic warrior Oya envisioned by Harrison-Nelson and the goddess of love Oshun brought to life by AmorAmenkum.

Together Toward Freedom | Langston Allston

Arts New Orleans’ Young Artist Movement team worked alongside lead artist Langston Allston to create Together, Toward Freedom. This three-paneled, illuminated, and projection-mapped mural combines both hand and digitally drawn illuminations which envision a brighter future for youth. Animations were created using Apple technology..

Lighted Baby Dolls | Cherise Janae Lockett

Presented by New Orleans & Co.

Cherise Janae Lockett is a New Orleans native nda seasoned illustrator, painter, photographer, graphic designer, beader, fashion designer, sewer, seamstress and culture bearer. Cherise was trained at Delgado Community College, Loyola University and the Material Institute. Lockett will be premiering a collection of new lighted Baby Doll designs.

An animated video projected onto mylar of a single drawing that was layered on top of itself multiple times. C work featured delicate ink lines and symbols accompanied by various sized orbs that invert as they overlap. What was once veiled becomes unveiled. There is a dance, a performative ebb and flow between revealing and concealing, almost as if there is a hesitancy to fully be one or the other, to be vulnerable or to be consumed.

This multi-modal study of the ways in which the Internet and social media have warped our perceptions of others, and by extension, ourselves. How has global online culture seeped into our everyday social interactions? Are our online personas “costumes” or a newer (and perhaps truer) form of self expression? What about the future: will it be good? We attempt to answer these questions and more, plus lasers.  

Evanescent | Atelier Sisu

Mississippi River Heritage Park

Evanescent is an immersive, outdoor light and sound experience celebrating the beauty, fragility, and transcendence of the natural world. Inspired by bubbles, the installation resembles oversized, deconstructed Mardi Gras beads. At night the sculpture is illuminated from within, creating a dynamic show of colored light choreographed to an ethereal soundscape.

Alchemy | Afri Modiste

Alchemy is a luminous collection of couture fashion by designer Renee Johnson. The collection approaches fashion design experimentally to transform and transcend idealized perceptions of glamour and techwear. This collection assists in shifting consciousness by introducing fashion forward concepts while finding balance between what is historically considered fashionable and fashion futurism.

Wild Creations | Monica Kelly

Presented by Apple

Arts New Orleans’ Young Artist Movement team and lead artist Monica Rose Kelly wanted to shine light on our society’s struggles since the pandemic, while showing how creative expression can be a source of healing. Students learned After Effects, ProCreate, and MotionLeap softwares, while also integrating live action footage and hand-painted illustrations into the work. Live performances will occur in conjunction with the artwork.

 

Ketleflower | Josh Pitts

Ketleflower is an immersive light and sound installation created with the intention of providing a breath of fresh air and cleansing—an oasis of calm—with a hint of whimsy. Ketleflower consists of a 12-ft sunflower sculpture with seeds of swirling, colorful waves of light; an ambient, atmospheric and ethereal soundtrack.

This work is inspired by William Blake’s poem Blake Leads a Walk on the Milky Way.
“He gave silver shoes to the rabbit and golden gloves to the cat and emerald boots to the tiger and me and boots of iron to the rat. He inquired, ‘Is everyone ready?’ The night is uncommonly cold. We’ll start on our journey as children, But I fear we will finish it old.” Utilizing Sacred Geometry, the Milky Way, and Butterflies. These images are to be used in breathing meditations.

An interactive Photo Booth, this artwork provides attendees with an opportunity to be virtually costumed by an AI stylist, with the results projected in large-scale across the Convention Center façade.

This interactive floor installation by Portuguese artists reveals our inner light and creates an orbit of illumination around each participant, which cosmically connects to the orbits of others, inviting the public to embark on a sensory journey. Each participant is recharged through playfulness and their visualized connectiveness to the spontaneous network of energy between us all.

Heaven | Kayie

Kayie will tell the story of Heaven through the eyes of its visionary, designer VanShawn Branch. As the world we live in has many cultures, so will the afterlife. “Heaven” will vividly depict how the artist see the people who live in glass mansions and walk streets paved with gold. The Sun and Moon will be featured throughout the collection. A tribute to regional and global cultures will be evident in accessories.

Whirling Dervish | David Sullivan

An interactive installation in which viewers’ silhouettes are turned into twirling blooming flowers in ever changing colors as particles swirl around them in response to their movements.


Mood Masks | Justin Shiels

Shiels initially designed these illustrations as a built series of 100 masks that represent the complicated emotions of being human. The goal was to create NFTs, but months later, the heartfelt illustrations are turning into something different. These Inspirational designs have been shared to give a little guidance and a little hope.
